Airbus and Kawasaki to boost hydrogen in Japan

Airbus and Kawasaki have forged an agreement to accelerate the use of hydrogen in Japan to help decarbonise the East Asian country.

The roadmap devised by the companies will chiefly focus on hydrogen use in aviation, with the eventual desire to develop Airport Hydrogen Hubs.

How the gas can also be used to decarbonise supply chains is also of importance to both partners.

Airbus is set to provide insight into how the aircraft work and access to fleet energy, whilst Kawasaki will provide new technologies to be implemented by the company either in its own products or within the supply chain.

Stéphane Ginoux, President of Airbus Japan, said: “We are very pleased to work with Japan’s leading hydrogen supplier Kawasaki. This partnership will obviously accelerate and promote efforts by the Japanese government to achieve a carbon-neutral, decarbonised society from overall aircraft operations in 2050.”

“We have specialised in the development of infrastructure for liquefaction, transportation, storage and transport to receiving terminals, contributing to the construction and expansion of supply chains for the hydrogen market,” added Motohiko Nishikura from the Hydrogen Strategy Division at Kawasaki.
