Alok Sharma urges further action ahead of COP27

COP President Alok Sharma is attending global meetings this week, pleading with the world to make good on their promises to mitigate climate change and keep Paris alive.

Ahead of COP27 in Egypt, Mr Sharma will speak at the Ministerial on Climate Action (MOCA) in Sweden, as well as the Stockholm 50+, organised by the UN General Assembly.

Both events focus on agreements made at COP26; chiefly the need for climate finance from developed countries to initiate a global response to climate change.

Mr Sharma is set to call for delivery on the Glasgow Climate Pact, as well as urge countries to revisit their 2030 climate targets ahead of the conference.

Ahead of his visit, the COP President said: “These events in Sweden are taking place against the backdrop of Putin’s brutal and illegal invasion of Ukraine.

“We must demonstrate that these threats have increased, not diminished, our determination to deliver on the Pact. Let us now pick up the pace on delivering a net zero, climate-resilient transition ahead of COP27.”

Turning “promises and commitments” into “action” were the resounding words he gave for what he hopes to achieve this week.
