Climate change responsible for deadly floods in Africa?

Fatal floods in Africa have claimed 120 lives and left thousands homeless.

These floods occurred in Kinshasa, within the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Experts believe that the consequences of these would be far less harmful if Kinshasa had an adequate infrastructure and better waste management system to deal with the impact of climate change.

Flavia Mwangovya, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for Campaigns in East Africa, said: “Climate change is known to exacerbate extreme weather events.”

“The DRC authorities, however, have failed to learn from previous disasters, which means these catastrophes continue to have a shocking, fatal impact on the residents of Kinshasa.”
