Design starts for Equinor’s UK 600MW hydrogen plant

Equinor has started the front-end design work for its new 600MW hydrogen production plant.

Enlisting German engineering company Linde to help with the design, the Norwegian energy company is hopeful of having its Hydrogen to Humber Saltend operational by 2027.

Located to the east of Hull, Linde has not only been awarded the design contract for the project, it has also applied to be in charge of operations and maintenance for its first five years of activity.

Being constructed at Saltend Chemicals Park, the hydrogen facility is expected to reduce the emissions of the park by one-third.

Green hydrogen will replace natural gas in many of the facilities at the chemicals park, storing 890,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

Asbjørn Haugsgjerd, Equinor’s Project Director, said: “[This project] is a vital first step in creating a low carbon hydrogen economy and achieving net zero in the Humber, safeguarding local industries and creating greater opportunities, whilst helping the UK to tackle climate change.

“With Linde Engineering, BOC and Johnson Matthey on board we are even better positioned to deliver this vision.”
