EV drivers warned range could suffer in cold snap

The range of drivers’ electric vehicles (EVs) could be hampered by the current cold snap.

That’s according to a study by AAA, warning EV drivers that they should expect to see the range of their car drop, as power is used to warm the car and defrost the windshield.

The study reveals that 12% of range can be lost to cold weather in general – and this rises to 41% when the heating is being used at full capacity.

As the battery looks to divert excess energy, the possibility of driving long distances shrinks significantly.

Charging speed is also impacted by cold weather, the report reveals; with the optimum performance of an EV battery between 20°C and 40°C.

Allowing more time to charge and ensuring tyre pressures are kept at the correct level can help with efficiency during the winter months, the study says.
