Fiji: ‘Climate change is our greatest threat’, not war

Pacific nation Fiji has explained that climate change currently poses more of a threat than military aggression.

During an Asian summit in Singapore, looking to address security concerns, Inia Seruiratu, Fiji Defence Minister, said “the single greatest threat to our very existence is climate change”, not “machine guns” or “fighter jets”.

This is following a series of heavy cyclones and floods that have wreaked havoc on the country in recent months.

Many nations from the Pacific have been heavily impacted by the frequency in extreme weather, with Vanuatu imploring the UN General Assembly to provide more protection last month.

Mr Seruiratu said that “human-induced devastating climate change” is a threat to Fiji’s “very hopes and dreams of prosperity”.

“Waves are crashing at our doorsteps; winds are battering our homes. We are being assaulted by this enemy from many angles,” he stated.

The recent changes in weather have been directly linked to human exploits including the burning of fossil fuels and continual release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
