London City Airport circles 2030 net zero target

London City Airport (LCY) has stated its desire to become the first net zero airport in London, plotting a roadmap to hit the milestone by 2030.

To achieve this, it is looking to remove gas for heating its buildings, ensure all airport vehicles become electric and incorporate a zero-waste policy with no single-use plastics on site.

LCY claims that 73% of its passengers get to the site using either public or sustainable transport, which is the highest of any London airport.

For Scope 3 emissions, it has committed to having 80% of all journeys to the airport made using sustainable transport by 2030.

LCY is also targeting zero-emission flights, with the use of sustainable aviation fuels and backing from the UK government, as it strives to push the fuel out.

Robert Sinclair, CEO, said: “Given our size, location and the nature of our route network and operation, we are ideally placed to help shape the next phase of aviation innovation in London, establishing it as a global leader of the net zero economy, supporting innovation, research and development and creating jobs for the amazing young people of this city.”
