The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One team claims a trial of using biofuels for its three final European races of the season cut emissions by 89%.

More than 44,000kg of carbon was prevented from being emitted by using biofuel trucks for freight between the Belgian, Dutch and Italian Grand Prix.

The racing team sent out 13 trucks over the summer, all powered by biofuels, with more than 1,400km travelled using the cleaner fuel.

Vegetable oils, waste oils and fats were used to power the trucks.

In Formula One, biofuels have already been announced for introduction into racing cars from 2026, which Mercedes will be a part of.

CEO of the team, Toto Wolff, said: “Trialling the use of biofuels for our land freight is another example of our commitment to embed sustainability in every decision we make and action we take. We aim to be on the cutting edge of change and hope we can make the adoption of sustainable technology possible as we are all in the race towards a sustainable tomorrow.”
