New collaboration announced for innovative hydrogen storage solution

A new collaboration has been announced between GKN Hydrogen, Southern California Gas Co (SoCalGas) and the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for an innovation hydrogen storage solution project.

GKH Hydrogen has developed HY2MEGA, which can enable long duration clean energy storage without the need for compression and at scale, the combined technology could provide resilient power in case of outages.

Two of the HY2MEGA hydrogen storage subsystems will connect to an electrolyser and fuel cell at the ARIES facility on NREL’s Faltirons Campus near Boulder, Colorado, adding an additional 500kgs of hydrogen storage on site.

The electrolyser will use renewable energy sources and produce green hydrogen to be stored in the HY2MEGA, with the fuel cell then converting the green hydrogen to produce renewable electricity.

Katherine Hurst, Group Manager and Research Scientist at NREL said: “This project is exactly what the ARIES platform was designed for: demonstrate the benefits of a new technology that efficiently stores energy produced from renewable electricity.

“It brings together a national laboratory, a clean energy technology developer and a large utility to work on solutions that help decarbonise the power grid. We are looking forward to working with GKN Hydrogen and SoCalGas to advance this technology.”
