Nissan and NASA to co-develop super-fast EV battery

Nissan and NASA are working together to make electric vehicle (EV) batteries that can charge in just 15 minutes.

Reports have surfaced that this new battery could replace the current lithium-ion batteries used in EVs by 2028. It is also around half the size of current models.

Nissan announced the opening of a prototype production facility for these batteries – the next step in its decision to heavily push towards an electric future.

At the end of 2021, the Japanese car brand announced it was looking to invest £13 billion into EVs by 2026 and looking for electric cars to make up half of its production by the end of this decade.

It hopes this new venture into battery production will bolster its position in the EV market and improve the efficiency of its future vehicle models that it looks to bring to market.

Kunio Nakaguro, Executive Vice President at Nissan, said: “The knowledge gained from our experience supports the development of all-solid-state batteries and we’ve accumulated important elemental technologies.

“Going forward, our R&D and manufacturing divisions will continue to work together to utilise this prototype production facility and accelerate the practical application of all-solid-state batteries.”
