Pakistani PM calls for global help against climate change

Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, is appealing for global help to overcome the dreadful impacts of climate change on the Asian nation in the past months.

Pakistan has been hit by devastating floods, following an unrelenting heatwave this summer.

Sharif said to the UN: “No words can describe the shock we are living through or how the face of the country lies transformed. For 40 days and 40 nights, a biblical flood poured down on us, smashing centuries of weather records, challenging everything we knew about disaster and how to manage it.”

UN figures claim that there have been more than 1,500 fatalities, as a result of the flooding – with more than 500 of these children.

Overall, an estimated 33 million people have been displaced and impacted by the floods – which Sharif has blamed on the developed nations of the world.

He stated that like so many nations now being impacted by climate change, Pakistan was not responsible for the emissions that have caused it – calling on the rest of the globe to provide aid for its responsibility.

“Nature has unleashed her fury on Pakistan without looking at our carbon footprint, which is next to nothing. Our actions did not contribute to this,” the Pakistani PM affirmed.

UN Secretary-General agreed with Sharif’s claim, stating: “Wealthier countries are morally responsible for helping developing countries like Pakistan to recover from disasters like this and to adapt to build resilience to climate impacts that unfortunately will be repeated in the future.”

The G20 are to blame for 80% of the world’s emissions – and Pakistan is not the only Asian nation feeling aggrieved with the lack of action from the West.

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina added: “The rich countries, the developed countries, this is their responsibility. They should come forward. But we are not getting that much response from them. That is the tragedy. I know the rich countries, they want to become more rich and rich. They don’t bother for others.”

There are calls for the $100 billion climate financing provided to developing nations to be raised at COP27.
