Rivian plans to bring wind power to EV factory in Illinois

Rivian has unveiled plans to bring wind power at its electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois.

The US EV manufacturer and automotive technology company proposes to install a large-scale wind turbine that will provide clean electricity to enable the new R1 vehicles to be powered by renewables for their first charge at the production plant.

The turbine will have a capacity of at least 2.8MW that will generate electricity equivalent to powering 890 average US homes.

It could avoid around 177,000 tons of carbon emissions over its 25-year lifetime – the equivalent of taking roughly 34,000 internal combustion engine vehicles off the road for a year.

The project follows the installation of a 783kW solar canopy at the plant’s outbound charging yard earlier this year, which is scheduled to start generating green electricity this summer.

They support Rivian’s long term renewable energy vision of developing “high impact” projects that reduce the company’s carbon footprint while benefitting customers, communities and the grid and its ambition to reach net zero by 2040.

The company is partnering with Apex Clean Energy to develop the latest proposed project.

Andrew Peterman, Rivian Director of Renewable Energy said: “To us, our job isn’t done when our vehicles come off the line.

“While we’re working hard to help electrify transportation, we’re also pushing to accelerate the shift to carbon-free electricity for all. This wind turbine is an early step on that path, and it’s also a beacon of our vision for a clean energy future.”
