St Andrews Uni installs 1GW solar farm

The University of St Andrews has launched a 1MW solar farm to provide electricity to its campus.

Funded by the Scottish Government and Fife Council, the project is expected to reduce the university’s overall carbon emissions by 5%.

The Eden Campus already has a £25 million biomass plant, which provides hot water to 48 university buildings and 3,000 student rooms.

With the addition of the solar farm, the university hopes that the campus will become carbon-neutral within five years.

The solar farm will also provide power for electric vehicle charging points at St Andrews.

“These projects are not only an important step in the journey for the Eden Campus to become carbon-neutral but it is also an important step in helping Scotland meet the ambitious goal of being net zero by 2045,” said Economy Secretary Kate Forbes.

“We are committed to a programme of decarbonisation, the efficient use of heat and water resources across our estate, as well as a deep-seated institutional commitment to all forms of environmental degradation by 2035,” added Vice-Chancellor at the University, Professor Sally Mapstone.
