Contractors chosen for world’s largest solar-to-hydrogen project

Chinese oil company Sinopec has chosen the contractors to supply equipment for its new facility, which it claims will be the world’s largest solar-to-hydrogen project when it’s finished.

Sinopec is now China’s largest hydrogen producer and will begin construction of the site in the Xinjiang province.

Longi Hydrogen, Cockerill Jingli Hydrogen and the 718th Research Institute of China State Shipbuilding Corporation have been selected to provide 13 hydrogen electrolysers in a deal with an estimated overall value of 1.07 billion yuan (£127m).

These electrolysers are only part of the 52 that will be needed in total – that can each produce 1,000m3 of hydrogen hourly.

The overall cost of the facility is reportedly close to three billion yuan (£358m) and will include a 300MW solar plant, a hydrogen plant that produces 20,000 tonnes per year and a hydrogen storage tank that can hold 210,000m3.

The project is expected to be operational by the middle of 2023.
