Less than half of SMEs use a recycling service

Despite 59% of SMEs saying sustainability is ‘very important’ to their business, less than half use a recycling service.

That’s according to research by Biffa, which gathered the waste habits of more than 1,000 small businesses in the UK.

The research found that most businesses still use general waste bins for all waste, with many SMEs not having even signed recycling contracts.

Excuses given include no room for extra bins (17%), the cost (17%), not knowing where to begin (12%) and difficulty in management (6%).

The study found that 73% of these SMEs are considering adding recycling bins to their waste management but it calls for more public knowledge on how companies can recycle and the best way to do it.

Maxine Mayhew, Biffa COO, said: “While there’s lots of information out there about recycling for consumers and households, there’s not a great deal of helpful guidance for businesses.

“Myths like it’s too expensive or too complicated, can be easily set straight with some relevant business recycling advice.”
